NEW #Audiobook ESCAPING PSYCHIATRY 2. THE CASE OF THE SWAPPED BODIES narrated by Kathy James. Come and take a peek!

Hi all:

I don’t normally blog on Sundays, but this being a long weekend (at least here in the UK) and with a few posts already programmed for next week (and a few more reviews making their way), I thought I might try.

I haven’t been talking about my books much because… Well, marketing is not my thing, and because I read so many great books that I know what the offer is like and putting my hand up and saying “Me, me, me” is not me. I keep thinking some day I’ll come up with some clever and original idea to promote my books, but so far it has not happened. In the meantime, I’m keeping busy with other things (not a lot of writing, although some, some projects that are waiting on feedback, others that are battling for attention, some that need more research…), including the teaching (waiting to hear about next term), translations, tidying up the place (I want to sell my house and leave), and reading and reviewing. Plenty of that.

But I did post the second book (well, the third if we count the prequel) of the Escaping Psychiatry series on ACX and wonderful narrator Kathy James showed an interest. And now, the audiobook is ready. It is a bit of a departure, as for some reason the other two books in the series had been narrated by male narrators. This time I thought that as the main character is a woman, and women do play a very important part in this particular story, I’d ask for a female narrator, and I’m very happy with the results. So, here it is:

Escaping Psychiatry 2. The Case of the Swapped Bodies Audiobook narrated by Kathy James

A woman shot dead. No enemies, no motive, only a story about how she swapped bodies with another woman found on her computer. The other woman in the story, the owner of the swapped body, goes into labour and won’t talk.

When FBI Agent Dave Dean asks psychiatrist/writer Mary Miller for her assistance, she doesn’t know that The Case of the Swapped Bodies is not the only mystery in Port Haven. A hit and run, an armed robbery gone wrong and questions about family traditions, priorities and legacies come into play and complicate matters. The line between fact and fiction is more tenuous than anybody realised and suspense is on the menu.

This is the third book in the Escaping Psychiatry series and it poses new challenges for Mary Miller. And not all the challenges are professional ones. How do you carry on when you’ve survived the unthinkable?

Escaping Psychiatry. Beginnings by Olga Núñez Miret

How far would a writer go for a killer story? This is the question psychiatrist Mary Miller must answer to solve the first mystery/thriller of her career. You can get to know the main characters of this psychological thriller series for FREE and test your own acumen and intuition in this novella about the price of ambition.

Dr Mary Miller is a young psychiatrist suffering a crisis of vocation. Her friend Phil, a criminalist lawyer working in New York, invites her to visit him and consult on the case of a writer accused of a serious assault. His victim had been harassing him and accusing him of stealing his story, which he’d transformed into a best-selling book. The author denies the allegation and claims it was self-defense. When the victim dies, things get complicated. The threshold between truth and fiction becomes blurred and secrets and lies unfold.

Escaping Psychiatry. Beginnings is the prequel to Escaping Psychiatry a volume collecting three stories where Mary and her psychiatric expertise are called to help in a variety of cases, from religious and race affairs to the murder of a policeman, and in the last case, she gets closer than ever to a serial killer.

If you enjoy this novella, don’t forget to check Mary’s further adventures. And there are more to come.

The book is also available in many other online stores, including Google (although they change their prices at will, that is why I haven’t included the link in case it is not free there), so do check wherever you get your e-books as it’s likely to be there.

And, as I’ve talked about the other two books in the series, well, I had to mention the first one (yes, this was written before the prequel and the first story, ‘Cannon Fodder’ is over twenty years old).

Escaping Psychiatry cover by Ernesto Valdés

Escaping Psychiatry

‘Escaping Psychiatry’ is a collection of three stories in the psychological thriller genre with the same protagonist, Mary, a psychiatrist, and writer. She is trying to develop her literary career but circumstances and friends conspire to keep dragging her back to psychiatry.

In ‘Cannon Fodder’ Mary has to assess Cain, an African-American man accused of inciting a religious riot when he claimed that he could hear God and God was black. He might not be mad, but Mary is sure he’s hiding something.

‘Teamwork’ sees Mary hoodwinked into offering therapy to Justin, a policeman feeling guilty after his partner and ersatz father was killed on-duty. Before Mary can extricate herself from the case, things get personal.

In ‘Memory’ Mary goes missing after an incident with Phil, who is manic as he hasn’t been taking his medication. When she is found, she has been the victim of a horrific crime, but they soon discover she was luckier than they had realised.

The epilogue revisits Mary at the point of the trial of her abductor and sees what changes have taken place in her life. Will she finally manage to Escape Psychiatry?

New #audiobook Click Me Happy! A romantic novella with three endings now narrated by Afton Laidy Jordan

Hi all:

As I’ve been telling you, as much as we love reading and seem to spend most of our days doing it, there’s also a current move towards making the most of our time by listening to things whilst we are busy driving, walking, running, exercising, doing chores… anything that isn’t too mentally demanding. There are podcasts, of course good old and new radio, and audiobooks.

Another one of my novels is now available as an audiobook (I have a few more on the making but it’s a bit of a laborious process).

Click Me Happy! Audiobook. Narrated by Afton Laidy Jordan
Click Me Happy! Audiobook. Narrated by Afton Laidy Jordan

Afton Laidy Jordan, who’s also narrated Twin Evils? decided to try my experimental romantic novella, where I decided to give the readers the option to choose between three endings. She gives the novella the fun and quirkiness it deserves. In case you don’t remember it or you joined me after its publication, here I give you Click Me Happy! A Romantic Novella with Three Endings
Lilith, the protagonist, does not believe in all that ‘romantic nonsense’. When her boss and friend, Debbie, asks her to create a digital books section for the library where they both work, she triggers a series of events that shake all of Lilith’s strongly held beliefs.

Her dislike for social networking is put to the test and despite her love for privacy and technological naïveté she manages to make a number of virtual connections. The most interesting one, without a question, is Zane, a talented and attractive author and painter. Their friendship quickly develops into something else. But, what exactly? Lilith doesn’t have a clue.

A bet with Rowena, her childhood best-friend, offers her an opportunity to test her feelings for Zane and their relationship, and a meeting, ‘real’ this time, is organised in the gorgeous setting of Bermuda.

At that point, you, the reader, have the choice. Do you want the story to end up happy ever after? Do you think there’s no chance for them? Or maybe you believe that there has to be more to life than romantic stories and a neutral ending or new beginning is more true to life? There are three endings for you to pick from. See what you think!

I’m waiting for the Audible free codes, but let me know if you might be interested in one and I’ll keep you posted as soon as I get them. (Ah, and don’t worry if you can’t resist the curiosity. Most of the readers go ahead and read the three endings;)

#Newbook and translation. Dark Prophecy by Javier Haro Herráiz (@JavierHaroHerra) A very postmodern Messiah. And new #audiobook

Hi all:

As you know I normally bring you new books and authors on Fridays. And as you also know, apart from writing and having done a few other things in my life (yes, being a psychiatrist too), I translate books from English to Spanish and vice versa, not only my own books, but also those of others.

Today I bring you a book I’ve translated for a fellow indie author, Javier Haro Herraiz, from Spain, a great supporter of indie authors and a prolific writer in a variety of genres, and who has a great love for superheroes, comics and horror. His writing style is pretty unique (you’ll either get it or it will drive you mad. I’ve done my best to not change it too much in the translation), as he seems to write comics without words. His novels are in general short, dynamic, and they are graced with a narrator that you will either love or hate (yes, it’s a Marmite kind of situation).

Here is the book:

Dark Prophecy by Javier Haro Herráiz
Dark Prophecy by Javier Haro Herráiz

Dark Prophecy by Javier Haro Herráiz

And from the Darkness a Warrior born in Heaven and bred in the Underworld will arrive… And a young dark skinned woman with blue eyes will arrive to unite them all under the same cloak… And the one who swore to protect us will rebel against the human race… And the day will arrive when a Big War between Heaven and Hell will be unleashed, and that day there will be death and wailing everywhere…

International link:

myBook.to/B01HMWNJFG

To give you a better idea of the book, I read the original Spanish version and wrote a review quite  a while back, so I thought I’d translate it for you (although of course it does not reflect the translation side of things)

My review (of the Spanish original):

If one could say that there is a ‘norm’ with regards to novels, Javier Haro Herráiz’s novels do not adhere to it.

In general his novels are short and have the feel of a novel by installments (or perhaps a better comparison would be a comic or a serial like the old ones shown in the cinema, where Pauline was tied up to the railway line and we didn’t know what would happen until next week) where each episode could be read independently, and therefore I recommend them if you don’t have a lot of time and only read a few minutes at a time. And as it’s usual in these type of stories there is also an invisible narrator who reminds us where we were or where the action was when we last left it (and that can have a surprising effect if we read it all in one go).

The author, who has more than his fair share of original ideas and entangled situations, puts his trust in his readers hoping that they’ll be as creative as he is, and his descriptions of the action, the events or the characters are basic and brief, to allow each and all readers to create their own movies in their heads. In that universe, all women are beautiful and all men, are well, men.

Dark Prophecy opens up with a suggestion full of possibilities. The birth of a new Messiah in complex circumstances. I won’t give you any spoilers, but although you know the basic story, the details will surprise you. What do you think a modern Messiah born nowadays would do? How would this Messiah spread the message? Would the reception given to such Messiah be better or worse than to the previous one?

Personally I thought that the characters and the situations could have been further explored, but I can’t deny that the novel made me think, intrigued me and I read it very quickly.

A comic without drawings, or a postmodern novel centred on the surface and the banality of modern life. I’ll let you decide for yourselves. I’m waiting to see what the author’s universe brings us next.

Ah, and last minute, but the audio for my novella Escaping Psychiatry. Beginnings has just become available. At the moment in Audible and Amazon but it should be available in other places soon.

Here I leave you a sample in Sound Cloud and You Tube so you can check the fabulous narration of Marlin May. He’s told me he’s also available to adapt books written in UK English to US English (I’m sure you all remember Wendy Janes’s great post about the differences between the two. You can refresh your memory here).

I’ll let you know when I get the free codes, but for now, just check this sample:

#Guestauthor Uvi Poznansky (@UviPoznansky) The David Chronicles and The Music of Us. Art and stories

Hi all:

You know on Fridays I like to bring you guest authors and new books. I realised, after author and artist Uvi Poznansky was so kind as to feature me as a guest in her blog (check here, and don’t forget to follow her blog for her news and her great features) that although I’d shared some of her books when she’d featured them as part of collections with several authors, she’d never been a guest in her own right, and I thought it was about time.

Here she is:

Author Uvi Poznansky
Author Uvi Poznansky

Uvi Poznansky is a California-based author, poet and artist.

She earned her B. A. in Architecture and Town Planning from the Technion in Haifa, Israel. During her studies and in the years immediately following her graduation, she practiced with an innovative Architectural firm, taking a major part in the large-scale project, ‘Home for the Soldier’; a controversial design that sparked fierce public debate.

At the age of 25 Uvi moved to Troy, N.Y. with her husband and two children. Before long, she received a Fellowship grant and a Teaching Assistantship from the Architecture department at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where she guided teams in a variety of design projects; and where she earned her M.A. in Architecture. Then, taking a sharp turn in her education, she earned her M.S. degree in Computer Science from the University of Michigan.

During the years she spent in advancing her career–first as an architect, and later as a software engineer, software team leader, software manager and a software consultant (with an emphasis on user interface for medical instruments devices)–she wrote and painted constantly, and exhibited in Israel and California. In addition, she taught art appreciation classes. Her versatile body of work can be seen online at uviart.com. It includes bronze and ceramic sculptures, oil and watercolor paintings, charcoal, pen and pencil drawings, and mixed media.

Rise to Power by Uvi Poznansky

Rise to Power (The David Chronicles Book 1) by Uvi Poznansky

Here is the story of David as you have never heard it before: from the king himself, telling the unofficial version, the one he never allowed his court scribes to recount. In his mind, history is written to praise the victorious—but at the last stretch of his illustrious life, he feels an irresistible urge to tell the truth. In the first volume, Rise to Power, David gives you a fascinating account of his early years, culminating with a tribal coronation. Rooted in ancient lore, his is a surprisingly modern memoir.

In an era of cruelty, when destroying the enemy is deemed a sacred directive, the slayer of Goliath finds a way to become larger than life. His search for a path to power leads him in ways that are, at times, scandalous. Notorious for his contradictions, David is seen by others as a gifted court entertainer, a successful captain in Saul’s army, a cunning fugitive, a traitor leading a gang of felons, and a ruthless raider of neighboring towns who leaves no witnesses behind.

How does he see himself, during this first phase of his life? With his hands stained with blood, can he find an inner balance between conflicting drives: his ambition for the crown, his determination to survive the conflict with Saul, and his longing for purity, for a touch of the divine, as expressed so lyrically in his psalms and music?

If you like ancient historical fiction about court intrigue, this king David novel has a modern twist like no book you have read before.

A Peek at Batsheeba by Uvi Poznansky
A Peek at Batsheeba by Uvi Poznansky

A Peek at Bathsheba (The David Chronicles Book 2)

by Uvi Poznansky

Against the backdrop of wars, raging within the land and without, David is growing into the mantle of leadership. Between his anointment as a tribal king and his anointment as the king of all of Israel, he uses wisdom, cunning, and his own understanding of the forces of history, aiming for high ideals: stopping the bloodshed, uniting the nation, and bringing about healing and peace.

But then, having reached his peak, David falters. He makes a serious error that threatens to undo his political success, and cost him not only the adoration of his people—but also the sense of being sustained by a divine power. That error is the most torrid tale of passion ever told: his deliciously forbidden love for Bathsheba, followed by his attempt to cover up the ensuing scandal by sending her husband—who serves him faithfully in his army—to his death.

This standalone novel is volume II of The David Chronicles. It is told candidly by the king himself. David uses modern language, indicating that this is no fairytale. Rather, it is a story that is happening here and now. Listen to his voice as he undergoes a profound change, realizing the magnitude of his sin, and the curse looming over his entire future.

If you like ancient historical fiction about court intrigue, this king David novel has a modern twist like no book you have read before. And among forbidden love books, this one stands alone.

The Edge of Revolt by Uvi Poznansky
The Edge of Revolt by Uvi Poznansky

The Edge of Revolt (The David Chronicles Book 3) by Uvi Poznansky

Struggling to find the right balance between loving his sons and upholding justice, David is silent when Amnon rapes his daughter, Tamar, and when Absalom lures Amnon to his death. These crimes go unpunished, because a mysterious change has come upon the king, which his court scribes note even before he does. In the past he had to explain his actions, such as the affair with Bathsheba, to them. Now, they want to understand the opposite thing: his lack of action.

In families other than his, such matters may be a mere matter of gossip. Yet when assault, incest, and murder occur in the king’s family, they affect matters of the state. David is toppled from his throne, and must escape from the son he adores, Absalom.

Even as he finds a way to quell the revolt and come back to the City of David, the road ahead seems unclear. How will he find the right successor amongst his remaining sons, the one who will connect to him and continue his legacy?

This standalone novel is volume III of The David Chronicles. It is told candidly by the king himself. David uses modern language, indicating that this is no fairytale. Rather, it is a story that is happening here and now. Each volume can be read as a standalone novel. Taken together, they put you in the skin of the character from youth to old age.

In 1970, Lenny can no longer deny that his wife is undergoing a profound change. Despite her relatively young age, her mind succumbs to forgetfulness. Now, he goes as far back as the moment he met Natasha, when he was a soldier and she a star, brilliant yet illusive. Natasha was a riddle to him then, and to this day, with all the changes she has gone through, she still is.

Digging into the past, mining its moments, trying to piece them together this way and that, dusting off each memory of Natasha, of how we were, the highs and lows of the music of us, to find out where the problem may have started?

To their son, Ben, that may seem like an exercise in futility. For Lenny, it is a necessary process of discovery, one that is as tormenting as it is delightful. He often wonders: can we ever understand, truly understand each other – soldier and musician, man and woman, one heart and another? Will we ever again dance together to the same beat? Is there a point where we may still touch?

From Book 1: Ten years ago, when she was seventeen, Anita started an affair with Lenny, in spite of knowing that he was a married man. Now married to him and carrying his child, she finds herself condemned to compete with Natasha’s shadow, the memory of her brilliance back in her prime, before she succumbed to early-onset Alzheimer’s. Despite Anita’s lack of education, her rough slang, and what happened to her in the past, Lenny tries to transform her. He wants her to become Natasha.

Faced with his compelling wish, and the way he writes her as a character in his book, how can Anita find a voice of her own? And when his estranged son, Ben, comes back and lives in the same small apartment, can she escape the love triangle? Can she keep the balance between the two men, whose desire for her is marred by guilt and blame?

Do you like historical fiction about the 20th century, especially when it is tinged with a family saga romance and wrapped with a second change in love with a strong female lead? Then this series, Still Life with Memories, is for you.
