#Bookreview, news, and a sample. #ILoveYourCupcakes #Romance

Hi all:

I decided to take a mini-break from my reviews (not that I’ve finished reviewing all the books, but some of the books I’ve reviewed recently are not due to be published yet, so…) to bring you some news. And to share a lovely review of one of my books.

First, some of you know already, but I’m now back in Barcelona. Although I will probably visit the UK sometimes, as I have friends there, I’ve sold my house, so I won’t be spending there long periods of time. I might tell you more about the process itself at some point, but let’s say it put my patience to the test and it took longer than I expected. I have only been back a few weeks, my things took a bit of time to join me and I’m still trying to get settled here, so I’ll keep you posted. (The weather has been quite crazy, but I know that’s been the same everywhere, so I’m not too alarmed yet, worried that I might have brought the weather with me).

Second, as those who read me often know, I don’t talk about my own books often and don’t check my review unless somebody shares them with me.  But Robbie Cheadle, baker, writer and blogger extraordinaire, was kind enough to review the audio of my book I Love Your Cupcakes, recently, and I had to share it with you.

Here it is:

#Bookreview – I Love Your Cupcakes by Olga Nunez Miret

Oh, and don’t forget to check Robbie’s blog and her books. If you love cakes and great stories, you should not miss her collection of books created in collaboration with her son Michael. And she has a new book just out. Check it here!

As this book has also been republished in Spanish by a small independent publishing company, I thought it was a sign I had to talk about it. Ah, and the #MeToo campaign has made me thought about it more than once. Unfortunately, sometimes fiction is not so fictional.

Here a sample, from chapter 16, where the main protagonists, Dulce and Adelfa, and the two members of another team competing in the same TV baking programme, are having a bit of a break.

The girls’ night in was exactly what the two teams needed. They had a heated discussion about what movie to watch, with Adelfa and Trisha set up on an action movie or a thriller, and Dulce and Candy keener on a comedy. Eventually, they decided to start with a romantic comedy and if they still felt like watching anything else they’d look for something less “fluffy.” They ordered from a variety of fast-food venues and more than anything, they had a great time talking about their businesses and their lives.

“It’s amazing to think that after being all day in the kitchen around food we can still eat,” Dulce noted.

“I don’t know if it’s the nerves or what, but I don’t think I’ve eaten a proper decent meal since all this started” Trisha replied. “I’ve just realized I’m starving!”

“A proper decent meal this? I thought you were into organic products” Adelfa said, stuffing a big chunk of pizza into her mouth and proceeding to munch it noisily.

“Well, OK, a good old-fashioned bad-for-you bit of food then” Candy nodded. “If one is good all the time it’s too boring. After all, if there was nothing bad in the world, and no temptations, how hard would it be to be good? There would be no merit in it!”

“I love how you think!” Dulce declared.

The romantic movie got them talking about relationships. They realized that none of them were, or had been, in a steady relationship for some time.

“I guess we’re very dedicated to our businesses and we don’t have much time to do things that encourage the birth of a relationship.” Candy said.

“I’m firmly of the opinion that women who are in a relationship with somebody have a better chance of ending up in another relationship than if they are alone,” Trisha said.

“How do you work that one out?” Adelfa asked.

“Oh, it’s my own theory, but it’s the law of the market. If you are with somebody, it signals to other men that you are relationship material, others find you desirable (and men are suckers for competition,  having to prove that they are better than anybody else, can have what other men have and take it from them) and your market value is higher. If you’re alone, on the other hand, either nobody values you and thinks you’re good enough, or you’re too difficult. Your market value is lower. You’ll have to offer a discount to make a sale. It’s also easier to find a job if you’re already in one than if you are unemployed.”

“Trisha’s law of relationships,” Candy said. She’d evidently heard her friend expose her theory a few times.

“No, don’t mock her. I think she might be onto something.” Adelfa said.

“It’s also quite possible that being independent women, our own bosses, and used to doing things our own way will not make us very attractive to certain types of men either,” Dulce said. “Look at my friend Adelfa, here. Not only is she in a fairly successful partnership with me, but she’s on her way to becoming a Professor at University, she does her own research, she’s a sought-after chemist…And on top of that, she’s pretty too. You need to be fairly self-confident to try and woo her.”

Adelfa smiled and pinched Dulce’s cheek.

“We’re all pretty amazing women. Anybody for some Chinese food?”

They went to bed quite late, tired but happy and relaxed. They had a whole free day ahead of them!

And Storm, the third of the partners of their bakery/coffee shop/bookshop/art gallery and ex-fire station, is an artist who is not a master in the art of love. Multiauthor event in Facebook. A Time for giving. Thanksgiving, audiobooks, giveaways… Today, Twin Evils?

Hi all:

I’m sure you remember that on Tuesday I mentioned the A Time for Giving event organised by Uvi Poznansky to celebrate Thanksgiving.

Here is the link

A time for giving
A time for giving

And I’m participating with two audiobooks. I shared some fragments of I Love Your Cupcakes on Tuesday and today I’ll share some to do with gifts and giving related to Twin Evils?

First a reminder of the audio:
YA paranormal dark fairy-tale (or even romance, see what you think!) Twin Evils?

Twin Evils? audibook. Narrated by Afton Laidy Zabala-Jordan
Twin Evils? audiobook. Narrated by Afton Laidy Zabala-Jordan

Once upon a time there was a pair of twins, a girl and boy. Ruth was blonde, blue eyes, very fair and really good. Max was dark haired, grey eyes, broody and bad. Their next door neighbour and pal, Hilda, tried to be friends with both but it was not an easy task. They didn’t like each other and she found herself in the middle trying to keep the peace. Max found his sister impossibly perfect and tiresome, and Ruth could not stand her brother’s bad boy attitude and his horrible behaviour. She was scared of him. Ruth was too perfect and child-like for the real world and Hilda suspected something was wrong but didn’t know what. Was she the angel everybody took her for? Was she ill?  When both twins started talking about fate and said that “something” would happen she worried. What could she do? And indeed they were right. Something did happen.

‘Twin Evils?’ is a New Adult novella (approx. 40 pages) that begins like a fairy tale, talks about friendship against all odds, tragedy, romance, and has a touch of the paranormal. Fast paced and entertaining with intriguing, mysterious and ultimately lovable characters it will make you feel good but leave you wondering. If you have plenty of imagination and love a compact and fulfilling read (or listen), try it out!

And now, the fragments:

In the first one, Max and Hilda, who are friends and neighbours, are talking about the birthday party for Max and his twin sister Ruth.

“Oh yes, the famous ‘birthday party’. The ‘little princess’ is seventeen, rejoice universe.” His sarcasm was nearly visible.

“You are seventeen too.”

“But all this fuss isn’t about me, and you know it well. For me they wouldn’t even open a packet of peanuts. They’d rather if I hadn’t been born.”

“You aren’t fair. That isn’t true.”

“OK. You listen to them this evening, and then tell me. You’ll see. I know it already…There, have your present.”

He gave her a little parcel. His presents were usually something to eat, the skin of an animal or something weird and nasty that he thought was funny. She opened it with some apprehension.

“It won’t bite you.”

It was a beautiful silver ring, with turquoise and other semi-precious stones making a geometrical motif. Native American jewellery.

“Max! You didn’t have to…It’s beautiful, really. Thanks.”

“Do you like it? Does it fit you?”

It did fit nicely. Hilda saw Max’s eyes fixed on her bracelet. Ruth had given her a lovely silver bracelet for Christmas and she adored it and told everybody how much she liked it. Max had been terribly jealous since. He kept playing with the bracelet every time he held her by her wrist, and it seemed to be burning him to see her wear it. He’d tried all his tricks to make her lose it. Worse still, he got appendicitis just before her birthday and couldn’t go to the party or buy her a present. Now he’d tried a different approach. It was subtler. Quite refined for him.

“It’s really pretty. I love it, Max. Thanks.”

“A kiss.”

They kissed on the cheeks and she played with his curls before she left. He was smiling and more relaxed.

In the second fragment, the three friends are playing with the Ouija board Hilda gave Max for his birthday.

He played with fiery eyes, as if he were possessed. Ruth was scared, and, to make things worse, the board began to answer questions quite reasonably after a few attempts. To questions like: “Who is the best? Who is the nicest?” the answer was always: “Ruth”. When Max asked: “How will I end up?” the reply was: “in hell.”

“Cool. Real cool.” He said.

“Why did you make it say that?” Ruth asked, her pale face growing greyer, and her mouth trembling a little.

“I didn’t. It was the spirits…” Max replied in a deep, hollow and scary voice. “Its’ fate, little dove. You’re going to heaven, with the white, blond, blue-eyed angels, and I’m going to hell, with my friend Satan. Lucifer. Nice and interesting guy. I’ve never really liked harp music anyhow. I guess hell is warmer. And Lucifer had reasons to rebel, I think. I quite agree with him. Being nice and friendly all the time, helping others and following orders…No, no, that isn’t good enough.”

Ruth looked sicker by the second. She seemed about to faint.

“Please, Max… don’t say that; you shouldn’t joke with that, it’s dangerous…”

“I don’t care. I am bad and I want to be bad. I hate nice people, and I hate you. I can’t stand your goodness and your patience, and your generosity, and all that crap. Where is the fun in that?”

“Max, please…” Ruth’s voice had become a whisper.

Hilda was contemplating the scene fascinated, convinced that she should do something. But Max’s eyes were on fire, the grey in them was nearly black, his cheeks were flushed, his nose broad, his teeth shiny…He looked devilish. It was a frightening but not completely unattractive sight.

“You don’t like me either, you were telling Hilda, so don’t pretend. Someone played a nasty trick on us and put us together. We hate each other’s guts. We can’t live together. And we won’t. I’ll make sure of that.”

The third one comes right before a very important point in the story and it’s the eighteenth birthday of the twins. Sorry for stopping where I do, but I didn’t want to give the whole of the story away.

With the summer, the big happening returned. The Party. And that year bigger than before, because it was the 18th birthday this time. There was a disco organised, a catering company was taking care of the food, and there were more guests than ever. Max didn’t have any complaints about anything. He chose to wear black smart trousers, a short black jacket (torero-like), a white shirt and black boots. Ruth was wearing a long white dress this time. The  Pinters made their children pose for a photograph cutting the cake, like a couple of newly wed. Max and Ruth looked at each other and Hilda knew that whatever was going to happen, it would happen that day. She tried to distract Max, dancing with him and not leaving him alone, but at some point, around 8 p.m. he told her that he had something to do and left. She followed him at a distance and saw him talking to Ruth, grabbing her by the arm and pushing her to the garage. Ruth had been given a car as her 18th birthday present, while Max had to pay for the damages to the family car, but he didn’t seem to be upset about it. He smiled gracefully. He didn’t seem to care. When Max and Ruth got to the car, he’d forgotten the car keys and they had to go back to the house. In the interval, Hilda got in the car, in the back, and lay on the floor. Ruth and Max returned in a few minutes and Max drove off with Ruth sitting next to him. They seemed to be driving for a long time, in complete silence. Finally, after what felt like hours to Hilda, Max said:

“We’re nearly there.”

“Why do you have to do this? Drop me off somewhere and I’ll disappear from your life if that’s what you want. You don’t need to…”

Multiauthor event in Facebook A TIME FOR GIVING, Thanksgiving, audiobooks and much, much more. Thanks to @UviPoznansky and all the fabulous writers

Hi all:

You might remember I mentioned working with other authors and sharing events with them and all the advantages of doing that in a post I shared in Literary Word Interviews (just click if you missed it). Well, here we are. Fantastic author Uvi Poznansky has organised an event on Facebook where we introduce our audiobooks and even give them away. It runs from the 20th to the 22nd of this month.

A time for giving
A time for giving, Audiobook Facebook event

I’ve probably already invited you to the event, but just in case, it’s here.

Here are all the audiobooks available:

all-audios

For more details, you can check this post.

Here are all the authors.

authors

You can check a bit more information here.

To gather some support I started a campaign in HeadTalker, so if you can join it shares the message on the chosen date (the 20th in this case. It works a bit like Thunderclap, but you can have a campaign with only 25 people supporting you so it’s a bit more flexible). Here is the campaign, just in case. (And don’t worry. The App doesn’t post anything other than that message or changes anything in your social media account).

I’m offering two of my audios. I thought I’d share some fragments of one of them, today and some of the other one Friday.

First, I Love Your Cupcakes
sweet culinary romance.

And here a few fragments that relate to the theme of the event, gifts and giving.

In the first one, the two friends, Dulce and Adelfa, are setting up their cupcakes shop/bookshop/gift shop and everything else, and they’ve managed to gather a lot of support from within the community.

“We have plenty of organising to get through but you are busy enough. I’ll see if I can get somebody to help us with the cakes once the supplies are here. By the way, Alf, the mayor’s office has sent us an e-mail offering us an old bus. I don’t know what state it will be in but we thought we could have the children’s reading group there, and if it is road-safe and mobile we could take it to different places and give it a bit of exposure. I wasn’t sure if you’d want to have a look…”

“A bus? Of course! I’d love to! Why don’t you send me the e-mail? I’ll ask them to bring it here. Unless we can drive it, then I’d bring it myself. The fire-engine should be safe for visits soon. Ah, and my Dad is coming later to check all the safety measures. We should be more than ready for Wednesday.”

The good news is that the bus in question is an old school bus. Later on in the book, when the bus goes into retirement, they get an even more interesting addition to their float (but I’m not telling you!).

In the second fragment, the friends, who are taking part in a baking contest on the TV, are talking to the two members of another team, about their interesting family relations, and how keeping receipts can get you into trouble sometimes.

“What I don’t understand is… how did Sebastian, I mean Storm, find out that you existed?” Trisha asked.

“It’s an interesting part of the story. Our Dad was always, and I imagine still is, although I’m not in touch with him, very peculiar about keeping receipts, bills and paperwork for everything he got. He came back from some trip and brought Storm a computer game as a gift. Storm already had the same game and asked him for the receipt to be able to exchange it, as he’d bought it in one of the shops of a big chain. Our father gave it to him. Most fathers would have thrown it away and that would have been the end of the story, but not our Dad. When Storm checked he realised that he’d bought other things in the same shop that he’d never given him, and he didn’t know of any other children his age that he would buy presents for. He felt intrigued and made enquiries at the shop with some excuse. They replied that they had sent the other games to the address he had given them. He asked for confirmation to check that they had been sent to the correct place, and bingo! It was our address. Storm has always been very good with computers and handling data and he traced even the marriage certificate back. Then he realised what was going on. Knowing his mother, he decided it would be better to come and tell us himself. His mother travelled so much that he took a chance during one of her trips and instead of going to stay with a friend, he came by…And the rest, as they say, is history” Adelfa concluded, throwing the rest of her ice-cream into a bin.

“Wow! What a story! And Storm must be a remarkable guy!” Candy exclaimed.

The third fragment shares the moment when Rock, a man who works at the studio, brings Dulce a present. He is a very special guy, and so is his gift.

“Come in. I was about to send you a message. I lost track of you and didn’t know where you’d gone.”

“I wanted to finish something I was working on…Here.” He gave her a red velvet box.

“For me?”

“Yes…Open it…”

It was a necklace. A fairly special necklace. It had what looked like an antique key, with the top in the shape of a heart, enamelled in red, in wrought iron, hanging from a very fine and thin strip of copper netting that served as a chain. It was beautiful and unique.

“It represents the key to my heart,” Rock told her. “I hope you like it. Lance suggested flowers and chocolates but…”

“You’re definitely right. I love it! Thanks, Rock.”

She kissed him on the cheek first but then they progressed to kissing in the mouth several times.

Thanks to Uvi for organising this great event, thanks to all of you for reading, and please, do come and join in if you can! And of course, share, like, comment, and CLICK!

Audiobooks Giveaway Miscellaneous

PenistoneFM (@penistonefm) Evolve project wins ITV’s The People’s projects. Would you like to listen to and review two of my #audiobooks? And a fantastic romantic #giveaway

Hi all:

Today’s post has a bit of everything.

First, big news! If you’ve been following my blog you’ll remember that a couple of weeks ago I shared the news that the local radio station I’ve been volunteering at, Penistone FM, and their Evolve proposal had been chosen as one of the projects going forward for ITV People’s Project. And, the results are in, and we’ve won!

I leave  you a couple of links where you can read more about their project and see a video from ITV showing when they visited Penistone FM (don’t worry, I wasn’t there, although I think all my colleagues did a great job) to tell them they’d won. So, if you’re curious to see what the place looks like, this is your chance!

Second. The good news about Penistone FM got me thinking about listening to things. Recently I finally got free codes for my two newest audios (three more of my novels are being turned into audios at the moment, fingers crossed), both for Audible.com and audible.co.uk.  So if any of you would like to listen to them, do let me know.  I don’t think I’ll run out of codes, but just in case, let me know as soon as you can.  I’ll need your e-mail addresses as I need to send you the codes and the instructions, but if you prefer not to leave them here, you can contact me directly at mmxrynz@hotmail.com (I leave you a reminder at the end of the post). I leave you some samples and information so you can make your mind up.
A thriller, about obsession, strange relationships and voyeurism:

Family, Lust and Cameras Audiobook narrated by LaDawn Black
Family, Lust and Cameras Audiobook narrated by LaDawn Black

Family, Lust and Cameras by Olga Núñez Miret. Narrated by LaDawn Black

Do you enjoy spying on others? Do you think it’s harmless?

Pat thought she’d left her past behind and started a new life. But one doesn’t get rid of voyeurism, obsessions and family quite that easily. Sometimes one has to adopt drastic measures to survive the harassment of a man, particularly a man like Herman. And this time Pat is determined to win, whatever the price.

In this world where technology dominates our lives, we’re never alone and privacy doesn’t exist, this novella more than a work of fiction is a warning about the dangers that haunt us in our own homes. How far would you be prepared to go to get revenge from somebody intent on controlling your life?

Author and psychiatrist Olga Núñez Miret brings us another story where the character’s motives and the inner-workings of their brains will keep you guessing. Brief, tense and with no flourishes, the story will keep you reading non-stop till the end.

If you’re fans of ‘Psycho’, ‘Peeping Tom’ and ‘Single White Female’ and are fascinated and repelled in equal degree by ‘Big Brother’ this adult story will get you hooked.

What would happen if your life became The rear window? How far would you be prepared to go to get revenge from somebody intent on controlling your life?

The audiobook version, narrated by LaDawn Black brings the action and its disturbing effects, even closer home.

What a fun book this was! Starting with a colorful, tantalizing cover, Ms. Núñez Miret’s story immediately drew me in. In it, Dulce and Adelfa are best friends and, coincidentally, half sisters (It’s complicated!). Dulce has dabbled in one profession after another; Adelfa has had trouble with men. Together they finally get their acts together by starting a cupcake and cake business, proving the age-old adage, “when things are meant to be” they just happen lickety-split.

Using an old, 1878 abandoned firehouse, they develop a community-based, fun-filled bakery, where books are offered to the public as well as good cheer. All is going swimmingly when they are invited to participate in a televised Hollywood bake off. The reader is then treated to the inner workings of shows such as this––some of it wonderful, some of it not so good. As the contestants get to know one another, romance blossoms for our heroines, bringing happiness full circle for all. If you want to read a highly entertaining, feel-good book, I definitely recommend this one!

Third.
